With musical influences ranging
from Beethoven & Chopin, to the Beatles & Yes; David Whitsel has developed a
fresh, new sound of his own, that can be heard through his guitar, voice, and songwriting.
David began his musical career on the piano, playing classical music, at the age of 8. At
age 10, he started playing electric guitar in his first band, the Jaguars, performing the
songs of the Beatles, the Yardbirds, the Animals, & the Beach Boys. He was 15
when his parents gave him his first acoustic guitar and when he began writing his first
songs. It was at that time that his finger style technique started to develop. The early
1980s saw David playing electric guitar in Jazz, R&B, and Rock bands. In 1985 he was a
finalist in the Colorado Composers Classic. With the resurgence of the acoustic guitar,
the early 90s found him performing in a folk trio. In late ‘96, he left his full time
job in high tech as an “industrial slave” (see the song, Free, from Wind In My
Soul) to record his first album and to further pursue his music career. His music is best
described as “acoustic folk/jazz with touches of rock & classical”.
“Wind In My Soul”, David's debut release on the Radha Records label and
co-produced by David, Don Garberg, and Ed Kaufman, is a collection of recent songs written
by David that showcase his unusual and very adept finger style guitar playing and
songwriting ability. Although David wrote most of these songs to be performed with just
his guitar and vocals, he recorded all but 2 pieces with a full band. The CD also features
performances by Don Garberg, Mike Marlier, Bob Rebholz, Ed Kaufman, and James Hoskins with
Chris Engleman on bass and Meriku Lewis on backing vocals.
David is currently performing and promoting his songs in the Rocky Mountain region.
