Mike Sumler began his career as a professional musician in 1963, as a piano and guitar player with various bands on the Texas gulf coast, Houston, and Austin. In 1970 he began writing and performing his own original material.

In the seventies, he had a successful touring dance band, "The Mike Sumler Band" based in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Since the mid-eighties, Mike has done shows at the Anderson Fair in Houston, Texas, with nationally known performers which include, Lyle Lovett, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Townes Van Zandt, Dave Van Ronk, Nanci Griffith, Louden Wainwright III, David Broza, and Trout Fishing in America.

Mike Sumler is a 1997 winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival's "New Folk Award." He is also a winner in the Napa Valley Folk Festival's 1997 songwriting competition. A 1997 nominee for best Folk/Acoustic Performer in the Houston Press Music Awards. Mike was also nominated in the Best Songwriter category in the Public News Reader's Poll.
