STRINGTOWN ROAD
One Man’s Journey

wpe3.jpg (1251 bytes)wpe3.jpg (1251 bytes)

For Stringtown Road’s Gary Winkler, the journey began back in the late 1960s and early 70s on the mountain festival circuit of West Virginia, where he performed with such old timers as Sloan Staggs and Ira Mullins. During the Miner’s Strike of 1974, Winkler was in the coal camps of Logan County performing for the rank and file. Later, he would work for the state’s Department of Culture and History, documenting traditional musicians and craftspeople in the field. Not bad for a guy who was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1952.

It was the best of both worlds for Winkler. "As a kid growing up in New York and New Jersey, I was exposed to everything from Ray Charles to the Beatles.", says Winkler "But the West Virginia thing exposed me to the roots of music and living it on a more personal level.".

Winkler’s first album of original songs, entitled "Next Good Warm Day", was released in 1978 and included such names as John David Call of Pure Praire League and Jon Corneal, whose credits include the Byrds’ classic "Sweetheart of the Rodeo".

Jim Comstock, a renowned editor and writer of the day, once said of Winkler:

"[Winkler] is a natural, the music coming out of him beautiful and articulate..."

After a brief stint in Nashville, Winkler returned to the road to seek out his niche in the music world. After years of playing in too many bands and too many bars, Winkler took a moment to reflect on his so-called career.

"I remember going back and listening to some of my old tapes", says Winkler, "stuff from the 60s and early 70s...and I realized how far off track I’d gotten. I needed to get back to those roots.".

Stringtown Road, an actual and familiar place in West Virginia, became a symbol of Winkler’s new-found journey. That trip came one step closer to home with the release in the spring of 1997 of Stringtown Road’s debut CD "Chamomile & Color TV" on Encrypted Records. That same year Winkler also co-wrote a number of songs with black singer/songwriter Zakiyah, whose debut CD "Au Naturel" hit college radio during the summer of 1997 and still continues to attract the attention of the industry. Winkler jump-started her band and toured with Zakiyah until January 1998. In fact, Winkler will continue to recieve co-writer credit for a number of songs on Zakiyah’s upcoming release "Go To The River", due out in 1999.

In 1998, Winkler also produced and contributed two songs on Katrina Landon’s debut CD "River Voice" for Encrypyted Records. The CD has recieved accolades from such magazines as Album Network and Totally Adult. Of this release, Friday Morning Quarterback wrote:

"...River Voice is packed with moving, dynamic songs that combine textural sophistication and sparseness in a way few artists can.".

Winkler and Landon toured together the summer of 1998 and put on a hell of a show in such places as New York, Boston, Chicago and Louisville. Landon provided vocal support when Gary Winkler’s Stringtown Road showcased at the 1998 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in New York.

In October of 1998, Gary Winkler’s Stringtown Road will once again strike a chord with their latest release entitled "Are We There Yet?". The Castaneda-like CD cover art is no mistake. "The journey continues", says Winkler "These songs show how far we’ve come ...I’ve come.". More stylistically focused and deeply personal, "Are We There Yet" is another milestone in the long and productive career of this serious singer/songwriter .

Gary Winkler is a voting member in the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences

Stringtown Road celebrates its roots in the back porch traditions of the Appalachian mountains, as well as those of the folk/pop sounds of the 1960s and 70s. The road might have a rocky edge at times with a song like The Better Life, a bittersweet farewell to a hopeless love, or a desperate search for love in The Eyes of Market Square. Or it could take an unexpected turn
up over the mountain with a banjo driven tune like Daddy Was a Logger. Whatever the driving conditions, this group is always on the right track.

"Touching portraits...edge and insight... a pleasant album."

"An exciting and upbeat addition to the contemporary folk music scene."
