Contemporary folk songwriter Terry Kitchen has been practicing his craft since fourth
grade and performing on the New England and national folk scene since the late 1980s.
blanket is his fourth release on urban campfire, following 1995's I Own This Town, 1993's
Blues and Grace and 1991's max po-KRIV-chak (Terry's given name).
Kitchen grew up in the college town of Easton, Pennsylvania, surrounded by the music and
spirit of the 1960s. As a bored teenager in the '70s, Terry roamed the small town streets
of Findlay, Ohio (the setting for "I Own This Town") before escaping to Los
Angeles for college and music school. He moved to Boston and fronted the original pop/rock
band LOOSE TIES in the mid 80s (whose video was played on MTV exactly once) before
settling on the intimacy of acoustic music as the most natural setting for his songs.
In the past eight years Terry has performed on the New England and national coffeehouse
and folk festival circuits (including Club Passim in Cambridge, Cafe Lena in New York,
Godfrey Daniels in Pennsylvania, the Bluebird in Nashville, and the Stone Soup in
Providence and the Falcon Ridge and Telluride folk festivals) and shared the stage with
such artists as John Gorka, Dan Bern, Vance Gilbert, the Nields, Rod McDonald and Kristina
Olsen. He was a finalist in the 1992 Falcon Ridge songwriter showcase (and a feature
performer ever since) and a '94 Telluride "Troubadour."
Kitchen, ever a student of his craft, is a member of the Boston "Songos"
songwriters group and a veteran of the Kerrville songwriting school. He leads songwriting
workshops and songswaps in conjunction with performances. His song
"Stonecutter," a faithful retelling of the Japanese folktale, has become a
staple of regional folk radio. "Christmas Is Homeless" (from I Own This Town)
was recently covered by Barabara Kessler. The 13 songs on blanket demonstrate Kitchen's
ability to tell stories from unique and surprising perspectives and showcase his command
of insightful contemporary folk songwriting.
