Background

DG started out in 1993 when we got together for some casual gigs, each playing our original songs. We did some recording (courtesy of John Hall at Spare Room Studios in Pacifica) and a few gigs with Andy Mayo, Chapman Sticker extraordinaire, adding his unique sound and high-tenor vocals to the mix. We all played a gig for the hell of it one night at the BLUE MUSE in San Francisco and decided, “Hey, this sounds alright!” 1994 saw more gigs and recording, and in 1995 Becky & Dave (this was before we were called Double Gammon) released a demo tape with 6 songs including Discarded Thought, Kite Song, and Undertow. Becky provided the majority of the vocals and songwriting and Dave chimed in with keyboards, backgrounds, engineering, and an occasional hit of his own.

Biography

Lyrics. Music. Vocals. Passion. DOUBLE GAMMON's music blends fabulous songwriting, brilliant voices, and dynamic performances. The duo's members, Becky Lloyd and Dave DesRoches, are two of the brightest new stars on the Bay Area's acoustic music scene. Bringing together years of performance and songwriting for both artists, DOUBLE GAMMON creates
a unique duo sound that spans the gap between pop, adult contemporary, folk, and rock. Call it "alfolkative pop" if you will.

Becky's innovative guitar style and songwriting are at times reminiscent of Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, and Ani DiFranco. Her heavenly voice reflects a diverse musical background from a capella and classical singing groups to various rock groups and exotic Javanese Gamelan Ensembles. "I get shivers when she plays and sings," one fan raved. Dave's piano and voice
fit seamlessly in the mix. Classical training, years spent learning songs off the radio, and numerous solo and band outings have given him an ear for songwriting, harmony, and style. From 1990-1996, Dave carried keyboard and lead vocal duties in BROTHER BUZZ, a Bay Area rock-n-roll club favorite. Teaming up with Becky has enabled him to get back to writing, and the results have been magical.

DOUBLE GAMMON has collected a pile of acclaim in their short time writing and performing together, culminating in their debut CD, Bridge the Distance. Coastside producer Patti Jo Roth awarded them "Duo of the Year" on Songwriter's Soundstage, a public TV show in Pacifica. Larry Carlin, longtime host for the Northern California Songwriters' Association
(NCSA) in Mill Valley, booked them in Local Gold at the Sweetwater, a showcase of local songwriting talent. Live radio performances include Simon Dray's FM French Connection on KUSF in San Francisco and Dave Stafford's Friday Folk-Off on KKUP, Cupertino. The duo also played live on Sedge Thomson's West Coast Live on KALW, broadcast worldwide on
the NPR satellite network. They have played several times at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley including sharing a bill with national touring songwriter Dar Williams. Lloyd was a finalist in the 1996 Napa Valley Music Festival's Emerging Songwriters' Showcase, the premier event of its kind in Northern California.

Becky and Dave have received kudos from both industry guests and directors of the NCSA. They have won "Best Performance" at NCSA events numerous times, and three of Becky's songs, Kite Song, Burning the Furniture, and Find Love, have won "Best Song" honors. In late 1997, they hooked up with Access Music's renowned president Mark Jeffrey to help them produce their debut CD, Bridge the Distance. With the expert hands of Petaluma engineer and instrumentalist Teja Bell, the album presents 10 original songs covering the spectrum from emotional ballads to up-tempo pop/rock to Latin-flavored acoustic folk to piano trio jazz.
