Eleni
Kelakos debut CD release, I WILL FLY, reflects the complex musical and performance
background of this striking, six foot tall, singer/songwriter. With a professional musical
performance history ranging from complex choral music to cutting edge contemporary music
theatre, Eleni infuses her folk-pop songs with memorable melodic lines and richly detailed
lyrics, evoking vivid and beautiful, unforgettable pictures. A storyteller of the first
order, Eleni uses her pure, powerful and rangy voice to convey the stories of ordinary
life, ordinary folks, lifting the ordinary into the extraordinary. Eleni shares producing
credits with innovative producer and recording engineer Doug Messenger, one-time guitarist
and arranger for Van Morrison, etc. The album was created the old-fashioned way: On analog
tape, with as little digitized effects as possible, with the vocals clearly front and
center, and with Eleni singing, for the most part, complete takes of each song.
The songs themselves range from simple vocal and guitar arrangements (the heartbreaking
story of ANNIE, a prisoner of circumstance and the double standard, and GOLDEN CIRCLES, a
song of hope in remarriage) to songs with a more ambitious approach like ANCHORED ON THE
WATER, (the story of an awkward loner who finds his soul on the sea), which begins as a
hush of plaintive harmonica and ends as a stirring anthem, with a powerful mix of strings,
percussion, acoustic guitars and vocal descant. Equally adept at writing songs full of
mischievious humor (like CASSIE, a full-blown ode to her tortoiseshell cat, complete with
yeowls, scampering feet, heavy, feral breathing and atmospheric saxophone and fluegelhorn
lines), or thoughtful social commentary (BURIED IN L.A., her recollection of being caught
in gang related crossfire in the heart of Hollywood, or NICKELS AND DIMES, the story of a
woman who chooses to stay in an abusive marriage and settle for less that what shes
worth), Eleni writes with unblinking truth and a deep belief in the power of hope and
personal transformation. The spirit of the album is summed up in the title song, I WILL
FLY, an unusually
conceived piece made up of vocals, acoustic guitar, bongos and a full thirteen piece
string section -- an affirmation of self-belief and the willingness to reach high and
towards the best and most original in us. The album benifits from the touches of
such contrubutors as Air Supply singer Tommy Funderburk, sharing the duet MARRIED TO A
STRANGER ), master studio percussionist, Luis Conte, the passionately brilliant violist,
Tom Tally (evoking the Gypsies on the sensual and provocative TAKE ME DOWN), and John
(J.T.) Thomas, esteemed keyboard player for such artists as Tracy Chapman and Bruce
Hornsby. Based in Los Angeles, California, Eleni plays the club, coffehouse and college
circuit, (link with tour info here) either with her four piece band, or as a solo act. She
especially enjoys the intimacy of live performance, and the opportunity to share her
stories with an appreciative audience.

"Eleni Kelakos gives
that self-produced "singer-songwriter" heap some credibility. Kelakos has a
great, big voice that can fly above a whispy string section or roll around in aching
electric guitar melancholy. There are some wonderful suprises here..."
Chris Jorgensen, Jackson Citizen Patriot
"If you want strong vocals, impressive songwriting and a world-class production, then
I WILL FLY will be a definitive "must have" for your collection... Eleni Kelakos
has one of the most powerful and dynamic
voices in the indie world today. Clear, strong, and perfectly married with the melody. Her
range is exceptional but it isn't merely her ability
to sing above and beyond the scale that makes her sound so incredible. Eleni has the
gift to sing the song with deep emotion and conviction without sacrificing her profound
vocal control and substance. Ah, but Eleni also knows how to write a song. She is a superb
storyteller with original concepts. She has fresh insight with impeccable taste in
creative and thought-provoking musical arrangements. Clearly a musical perfectionist,
Eleni has given us a glimpse inside the mind of a master tunesmith."

A Few Words
" I think this
singer-songwriter is superb. She delivers the real stuff,
doesn't sugarcoat her material with a lot of menial nonsense. Eleni Kelakos tells it --
and sings it -- like a pro! In my book of artists, she stands right up there with many of
the fine female artists I have heard in
recent years. This is One Classy Lady...As Talented as She Is Beautiful.."
